If you’ve ever had tiny ants marching across your kitchen counter that smell like coconut or rotten blueberries when you crush them, you’re dealing with Odorous House Ants.
These tiny brown ants are one of the most frustrating pests in New Jersey homes — and for good reason.
Why Odorous House Ants Are So Tough to Eliminate
Unlike many other ant species that have just one queen, Odorous House Ants have multiple queens. This allows them to form massive “super colonies” that can contain thousands (sometimes tens of thousands) of workers spread throughout walls, insulation, and multiple areas of your home.
Because of this unique biology:
-
Killing a few ants does almost nothing — the colony just keeps growing.
-
They can split their colony and move to new locations inside your home when threatened.
-
They are highly sensitive to their environment and will quickly relocate if disturbed.
Important Warning: Never spray any store-bought ant spray or insecticide directly on Odorous House Ants (or Pharaoh Ants). When these species feel threatened, they release a panic pheromone that tells the rest of the colony to pick up the eggs and scatter. This can turn one manageable infestation into dozens of new satellite colonies hidden inside your walls — making the problem much harder and more expensive to solve.
How to Tell If You Have a Serious Problem
-
Before a big storm or heavy rain: It’s normal to see a sudden surge of ants foraging heavily. Ants are extremely sensitive to changes in barometric pressure and will stock up on food before bad weather hits. This is actually a good sign — they’re usually coming from outside.
-
During a rainstorm: If ants are suddenly pouring into your home while it’s pouring outside, that’s a red flag. It often means the colony has nested inside your walls or structure and is flooding out.
The Right Way to Handle Odorous House Ants
Because of their biology, Odorous House Ants require a strategic, professional approach using baits, precise treatments, and often exclusion work to seal entry points. Quick sprays from the hardware store almost always make the problem worse.
At Monarch Pest Control, we treat these ants like the “super colonies” they are — with patience, the right tools, and a science-based plan that targets the entire colony instead of just the ones you can see
